A jewellery store owner in Papatoetoe, Auckland, suffered severe injuries during a robbery at Pooja Jewellers on Kolmar Road around 5:45 pm on Sunday evening.
According to Sunny Kaushal, chair of the Dairy and Business Owners Group, the store owner was struck in the head three times with a hammer and also sustained a knife wound to the forehead.
The injured owner is currently in hospital, has received stitches, and is awaiting further medical scans but is thankfully out of danger.
Details of the Attack
Five armed offenders reportedly broke into the store. Kaushal mentioned that other individuals present in the store, including a worker and a family member, were also injured. Disturbing video footage from social media shows three young children in the store during the attack and a worker approaching the offenders with a sword. Despite a protective cage structure at the shop’s entrance, the offenders managed to force their way inside.

Kaushal emphasized the traumatic impact on the victims and the ongoing fear among business owners. “This incident leaves behind huge trauma, destruction and pain,” he said, highlighting that jewellery stores in Papatoetoe have been frequently targeted, with this being the third such attack in the last three months. He called for increased police presence and enforcement to ensure community safety.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced the deployment of 63 additional police officers in new Community Beat Teams across Auckland’s three policing districts over the next two years. Luxon expressed his frustration over the situation, stating, “Nobody should have to fear walking down the street or worrying about whether their store would be ram raided. I’m sick of it, Kiwis are sick of it, and it’s unacceptable.”
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Police Inspector Keki Wilson confirmed that enquiries are ongoing to locate the offenders and their vehicle. He assured the community that the police are committed to holding the perpetrators accountable. “Violent incidents like these rightly cause concern, and Police are committed to holding offenders to account,” Wilson stated. The police are currently interviewing witnesses and conducting a scene examination.
