The government has announced a new subsidy program to help businesses purchase and install fog security devices. This includes jewellery retailers who have been increasingly targeted by robberies.
50% Subsidy for Fog Devices
Under the program, eligible businesses can receive a subsidy that covers up to 50% of the cost of an approved fog security device.
To qualify, businesses must meet certain criteria, such as having less than $5 million, below. The fog device must also meet minimum specifications and be installed by an approved security provider.
Specific Eligibility Criteria
More specific eligibility criteria for the subsidy include:
- Having road frontage
- 5 or fewer total staff members
- No more than 2 retail premises
$4,000 Subsidy Per Outlet
Each eligible outlet can receive a subsidy of up to $4,000 to be used specifically for installing a fog device through an approved supplier. If the total cost exceeds $4,000, the business is responsible for the remaining amount.
Businesses with 2 eligible outlets can potentially get the $4,000 subsidy for each location.
Surge in Retail Robberies
The government said the subsidy aims to address a recent spike in robberies targeting retailers, including jewellery stores. Police data shows aggravated robberies increased by 10% nationwide last year.
Violent smash-and-grab style robberies have become more common, even occurring during business hours when customers and staff are present.
Fog Security as Deterrent
Security experts say fog devices are one of the most effective tools to combat retail robberies. When activated, fog devices quickly fill an area with a dense, disorienting fog that obscures the view of perpetrators .
This delays the robbery and allows staff to enact lockdown procedures. It also buys time for police to arrive and catch offenders in the act.
Major retail chains have already adopted fog devices. But cost has been a barrier for many small, independent stores.
Applications Open Now
The government is currently accepting applications on the business.govt.nz website. $4 million in total funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Interest is expected to be high given the uptick in robberies. The subsidy makes fog security considerably more affordable for vulnerable retailers and installing a system could help deter future robberies.
