Retail NZ has expressed its approval of the newly established Ministerial Advisory Group for victims of retail crime. This initiative aims to expand upon ongoing efforts to address the increasing rates of retail crime in New Zealand.
Retail Crime Statistics
Retail crime has become a significant issue, with over 92% of retailers in New Zealand affected. According to a Retail NZ Crime Report published in October 2023, the annual cost of retail crime to its members exceeds $2.6 billion. Woolworths New Zealand recently reported a 9% increase in acts of violence and aggression in its stores over the past year, including a 50% rise in physical assaults.
Recent Jewellery-Specific Crimes
The jewellery sector has not been immune to this surge in retail crime. Recent high-profile incidents include the Michael Hill jewellery store robbery in Whangārei and the Pooja jewellery store robbery in South Auckland. These events underscore the vulnerabilities faced by jewellers and the critical need for enhanced security measures and support from law enforcement.
Impact on Retail Workers
“Crime puts both retail staff and the public at risk, as well as threatening the financial sustainability of retail businesses,” said Retail NZ Chief Executive Carolyn Young.
Ms. Young highlighted that retail workers face daily challenges from various offenders, including organised crime groups, drug addicts, and youths seeking notoriety on social media. She noted that nearly every retail worker has encountered crime and aggression in their workplace, with incidents ranging from theft and property damage to physical violence.
“Our members are telling us that crime is traumatic for them and their staff, whether they are working in a small store or in a big-box outlet. We are pleased the Government is committed to tackling retail crime. We are working closely with Retail NZ members, New Zealand Police, and the Government on a range of measures to combat retail crime, including the introduction of new technologies, more resourcing for police, and increased protections for retail staff,” Ms. Young added.
Industry Implications
The formation of the Ministerial Advisory Group represents a governmental response to retail crime, with potential benefits for jewellers who are particularly vulnerable to such offences. The commitment to increased police resourcing and technological advancements is a step towards safeguarding the industry.
