In response to a series of recent robberies, Michael Hill has taken significant steps to bolster the security of its jewellery stores across New Zealand.
The company’s latest security initiative follows two recent incidents, including an armed robbery at the Silverdale Mall store and a smash-and-grab raid at the Bayfair shop in Mt Maunganui.
“The offender was armed with a hammer, and left the store after the fog cannon was activated,” police states regarding the Silverdale incident and leads to the assailant’s arrest by the police around 11.20am on the Hibiscus Coast. Despite these efforts, the string of robberies over the past two years has prompted Michael Hill to re-evaluate and enhance its security measures to safeguard both staff and customers.
Daniel Bracken, Chief Executive of Michael Hill, emphasized the importance of security measures, stating, “security and safeguarding measures remain integral” for the chain. The company has introduced several new security features, including smash-proof glass, additional fog cannons, alarm screamers, and personal alarms for staff members. Another innovative approach being deployed is DNA spray technology, aiming to provide an additional layer of protection.
“We have continued to review our security measures to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect our team and customers.”
These incidents and subsequent security upgrades have broader implications for the jewellery industry in New Zealand. Jewellers nationwide are now faced with the critical task of reassessing their own security protocols in light of these developments.
