Police in Auckland have confirmed that three recent jewellery store robberies across the region are connected, with two individuals now in custody and a third suspect being sought.
The affected stores are Kayson’s Fashion Store in New Lynn, Krishna Jewellery Store in Papatoetoe, and Michael Hill at Mānawa Bay. The incidents occurred on 16 and 23 March and are being investigated as related aggravated robberies.
Arrests and Warrant Issued
A 13-year-old has been charged in connection with the robbery at Michael Hill Mānawa Bay. A 24-year-old man has been charged as a party to the robbery at Kayson’s. Police have also issued a warrant for 18-year-old Dillinger Tautari, who is wanted in relation to the Mānawa Bay incident.
Acting Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said, “We are concerned with the actions of this group. Our teams are still actively searching for the other offenders involved so that they can be held accountable.”
Tautari is believed to have links across the Auckland region and is avoiding police. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact police using reference 250323/1850, or to report anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
Increased Patrols and Retailer Communication
In response, police are carrying out increased patrols near jewellery stores and are speaking with business owners about safety practices.
“Our staff will be visible and conduct reassurance patrolling around jewellery stores as part of our wider response,” Harrison said. “We know this type of offending concerns retail staff and the wider public. Our staff will be engaging with retailers… to speak with them about how they can keep themselves, their staff and premises safe.”
Industry Considerations
These incidents highlight the need for ongoing attention to crime prevention in the jewellery retail sector. Retailers are encouraged to review their security measures, stay alert to suspicious behaviour, and maintain communication with local police.
