Gurdeep Singh, the owner of Pooja Jewellers in Auckland’s Papatoetoe, continues to express concerns about safety months after a violent robbery in June that left him hospitalised.
Singh and his family have taken significant steps to improve security, but he remains cautious about potential threats in the wider community.
The Incident
The robbery occurred when a group of men entered the jewellery store, attempting to seize trays of jewellery. Singh intervened but was struck multiple times in the head with a hammer. The attackers fled the scene after Singh’s son chased them out of the store with a sword.
Five individuals, including a 16-year-old, were later arrested and charged with aggravated robbery.
Security Measures
Following the attack, Singh has taken steps to bolster the store’s security. These include reinforcing doors, installing additional locks, and increasing staff vigilance.
“The door is much bigger, stronger. It’s just impossible to get through now,” Singh explained. “We have extra locks, and we are always aware and vigilant to see what’s going on.”
There have been no further incidents at the store since these upgrades.
Broader Concerns
Despite these measures, Singh remains concerned about safety beyond his store. He cited broader issues in South Auckland, including rising incidents of violence, such as stabbings and shootings.
“We feel safe when we are inside the store. I do feel sometimes with other people out there, I don’t know, one crazy person could come out, attack for no reason,” Singh said. “My concern is for the whole community, not just only for me and my family.”
Singh continues to recover from the attack, with lingering effects such as difficulty working under bright lights. Doctors have estimated that full recovery could take up to a year.
Community Collaboration
Police and community patrols have increased their presence in the area, providing some reassurance to business owners and residents.
“It does make me feel more protected,” Singh noted. “I feel safe, and I feel comfortable and happy for the shoppers coming into Papatoetoe.”
Singh also highlighted efforts by the local retail association, which is working with Auckland Transport and the council to install and repair CCTV systems.
“We have a few, but I realised not all of them are in working condition as they should be,” he said. “We have requested new CCTV, and hopefully, we will have more cameras very soon in the town.”
Singh expressed the need for increased security personnel in the area, particularly for extended patrol hours.
Industry Implications
This incident highlights the challenges faced by jewellery retailers, particularly in high-risk areas. The actions taken by Singh, including reinforcing store infrastructure and engaging with local authorities, serve as a reminder of the importance of proactive security measures.
Collaboration between jewellers, local businesses, and law enforcement can play a vital role in improving safety and reducing the risk of crime. For jewellers, adopting similar measures may offer enhanced protection for their staff and customers.
